Quilted Bedspreads - Bed Down in a Beautiful Designer Bedspread

Quilted bedspreads or throws – like the headboard on your bed – can make a great focal point for your bedroom, especially if they’re colourful and dramatic or heavily textured. On the other hand, they can blend in beautifully with the current décor in the room (we have matching curtains and bedspread at home).

Vintage décor and shabby chic in particular tends to favour a ‘blended in’ look and it’s a look particularly popular in bedrooms. Fabric designers we stock here at Curtains Made Simple who specialise in vintage fabrics include Elanbach (floral), Cath Kidston (‘cute’ country) and Emily Burningham (1930s Arts and Crafts movement).

Make Sure You Choose the Right Material

There’s no point splashing out on a velvet bedspread or a satin throw if you can’t stand the material against your skin. It might be too warm, tickly or slippy. So, first and foremost, before choosing a bedspread or throw think about the kind of material you’d like to sleep with. Wool blends and thick cottons are good choices. And linen blends work for the cooler months.

Meanwhile, if your cat or dog likes to come up onto your bed for a morning/night time cuddle then forget a silk embroidered bedspread (or get your pet de-clawed – which actually seems a bit cruel).

Delight in the Design

Bedrooms often look great in a country cottage/shabby chic vintage style (but then we’re biased). Some of our favourite collections include Cabbages and Roses Natural Hatley

Measure Meticulously

The best way to ensure your quilted bedspread or throw fits perfectly is to get it made to measure (beds come in so many shapes and sizes these days). At Curtains Made Simple we’ll make it up and deliver it straight to your door. All you have to do is give us the correct measurements (and we’ll help you with that too; just give us a call).

Washing Your Quilted Bedspread or Throw

It’s a very practical consideration but one that must be taken into account nevertheless (unfortunately) when it comes to choosing the material for your custom made bedspread or throw. That’s because certain materials don’t do well in the washing machine and have to be dry cleaned in order to maintain their look. Others can be washed in the machine but not every couple of days otherwise they won’t last as long as you’d hoped.

So, if the bedspread is going to be used every day then you are best opting for cotton or wool blends. Velvets, 100 per cent linens, embroidered silk and other sheer materials are best left for other household items. By all means do go ahead and get a bedspread or throw made in a luxury, highly textured material – just remember, it goes in the guest bedroom rather than your own!
