Thermal Curtains - Keep Winter and Winds at Bay

In these days of rocketing utility bills, an easy way to cut down on your fuel expenditure this autumn and winter is to ensure no cold air is entering your rooms via the windows, and that the heat remains inside where it should be rather than escaping outside. And this is where the need for thick insulating curtains comes in.

After all, there’s no point having your loft insulated and investing thousands of pounds on an eco-saving combi-boiler if you’re just going to let all that valuable heat wind its way out through gaps between the curtains or blinds and the window pane. At the same time as purchasing thermal curtains or thermal blinds it’s also worth considering investing in a window insulation kit to get those draughts sealed before they get even bigger.

What are Thermal Curtains and Roman Blinds Made From?

Insulating curtains and blinds aren’t just lined. They also contain a layer of high-density foam and layers which will both block moisture and reflect heat back into the room. You can choose from any material and pattern or colour to have insulated curtains and blinds made from – although cottons and thicker fabrics are best as the curtains and blinds will tend to hang better.

The curtains or blinds won’t look any different from ‘normal’ non-insulated curtains from the inside of your room. The lining usually has magnetic side-strips sewn inside the lining material and corresponding magnets on the wall. This has the effect of ensuring that the curtains remain tight against the wall to prevent draughts seeping through.

They can also be dry cleaned or vacuumed as you would a typical set of curtains or blinds. And, if you get fed up with the pattern or colour years down the line, it’s simple to replace the fabric with another of your choice.

Why Do Insulating Curtains Work Well in Summer?

It’s obvious why you should have insulating curtains in the winter but in the summer when it’s not cold outside, why continue to hang them? Well, for starters they keep the room nice and cool when the temperature outside is soaring. And secondly, they keep the furniture and fabrics in your room from fading because they prevent direct sunlight entering.

Another reason for having insulating curtains in your home – particularly the bedroom – is they block out all light which means it’s possible to sleep during daylight hours. They also have a sound-proofing quality, which also helps with a daytime sleeping routine.
